I’m not going to lie, when the end of August came around and the mornings and evenings seemed to get colder and darker overnight, I was a little bummed out. I love the summer! Even though this year has been more rainy than hot, I still love the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine. Last week, I was shopping around my neighbourhood and was surprised to see most shops filled with pumpkin décor. Already! It actually gave me a little kick in the butt to be excited about autumn rather than bummed out that summer was over. To kick start our September posts on Lux and Vitae, I thought it would be important to point out what I’m looking forward to in the coming autumn months.
Beautiful, Fall Hikes: I’ve always been one to stay indoors when the weather gets a bit colder, but last fall I actually went on a beautiful hike and it was more amazing than I could have imagined. Between the varying reds, oranges and yellows of the trees and the crisp air, it was relaxing, an excellent work out, and the best photo opportunity. I’m hoping to enjoy more fall hikes this year, hopefully at more locations…I’ve included a picture below this of our hike last year. I can’t wait to do it again!
Big Cozy Sweaters: I love wearing huge sweaters, both for work and just to run errands. They’re so easy! I love that they pair well with sneakers or boots – I’m definitely one that likes when a piece works with many different outfit options. I’m a big fan of layering so I’m always on the look-out for a nice sweater. Since most shops have their fall line already out, I’m already trying to find one (or a few) suitable for this season!
Halloween Decorations: It was only when I moved to England that I really came to appreciate Halloween as a holiday. Where I grew up (and currently live), Halloween was a big deal. Neighbours would make haunted houses on their driveways or in backyards, set up elaborate decorations, and have the best treats for you to pick up. In England, it isn’t as celebrated. So when I decorated my classroom and classroom door with a Halloween theme, my students thought I was nuts. But, they loved it – and so did I! There’s something about Halloween decorations that still gets me excited, and no doubt it’s because I spent years trick or treating as a kid.
Early Christmas Shopping: Nothing irritates me more than running around shopping malls the week before Christmas, looking for last minute gifts. Believe it or not, once September comes around, I’m already looking for my presents. Around now is when I start to develop my list and I start looking well before December, before stocks are running low in shops and before all of the nice wrapping paper is gone. I’m really excited to get started this year. I already bought my first present!
Apple Picking: When I was a kid, my parents used to take us apple picking all the time and I remember loving it! If you drive a little outside of where I live to the surrounding farmland, there are dozens of apple orchards who set up impressive autumn settings for kids and adults alike. This year, my fiancé and I were planning on going apple picking again. I may have lots of apple pies in my future!
After I wrote this list, I realized that there was a lot more to be excited about when looking ahead to autumn. So while I’m sad to let summer go, I’m prepared and excited for the upcoming season.
What are you excited for when looking ahead to autumn?
